How does one go from rape victim to convicted criminal? Saudi Arabia is an Islamic state with a strict interpretation of the Koran. According to this interpretation, it is immoral for women to be out in public with another man not their husband or male relative. Since the laws of the Koran (Sharia law) are also the laws of the state, the rape victim was a lawbreaker. When the sentence of ninety lashes and prison were handed down it was appealed.
